Culture is the customs, arts, social institutions, and achievements of a particular nation, people, or other social group. People as well as countries all have their own uniqueness, that’s what makes them interesting. That’s why we enjoy (hopefully) getting to know new people and we should take the same positive outlook when experiencing new cultures.
Lots of things you will experience in Europe will be different, embrace those differences in a positive way. If something seems offences to you, it’s probably not offensive to them, so try not to let it up-set you, just take it with a grain of salt. Remember, don’t stop being your friendly and open self, most Europeans find this to be a very endearing quality of American’s and does much to help our European friends warm up to us.
A big plus to traveling in Europe and making a positive impression with the locals, is to learn some key words in their language, such as greetings and common courtesies, like “thank you”. Starting off a conversation with “Do you speak English”, often times will result in a cold response from our European neighbor, even though they may speak English. Believe me, they know you are American, and if you show them the courtesy of trying to use their language, they will respond in kind by being very cooperative and helpful.
